Biryani Made for your Majesty
ABOVE: The legendary B. Merwan on Bombay’s Grant Road dates from 1914 and is still open.
I want to make a biryani and serve it to our King said Dad randomly one day as we sat around the dinner table eating Indian takeaway. If you don’t know my Dad – how much time have you got? – maybe a story for another day – If you ask one day I’ll tell you.
Anyway, you never know what to make of anything that Dad says (he just says and does so much – it was hard for me and my sister to keep up most of the time).
Well 850 days, 30,000 miles and over 1,000 ruined biryanis later – I think he has managed to do what he set out to do and what we thought was probably well beyond him.
Ladies and Gentlemen – I give you – DumBiryani.co.uk – Made For Your Majesty – biryani truly fit for a King.
Try one and tell us if you agree.
Some are great even – but very few that could be Fit for a King – and ours is one of the few that’s fit for your Majesty Our events bring people of all walks of life together to celebrate culture and food. Whether it’s bringing together non-Muslims to celebrate Eid, non-Hindus to celebrate Diwali, or people of every possible background to tie Knots of Protection – we create shared spaces where differences are celebrated rather than judged.
For Sure – Food is a way of breaking down barriers, and this is at the heart of what we do. Since Ramadan 2015, for every meal we serve, we donate a meal to a child who would otherwise go hungry. A meal for a meal. So far, we’ve donated 20 million meals (…and counting).
An ample selection of finest gifts and sundries are now available by way of the Dum Store.
An eclectic and charming mix of gifts to please favoured siblings, exacting Aunties and the hard-to-buy for. From small bestowals to bountiful hampers, there’s something for all persons and purses any time of the year.
All are so lovely you might just want to keep them for yourself! From Chai Hampers and Tea Towel gift-sets to Naan Roll Kits for at-home enjoyment.
Or bring Dum home with signature favourites from our cafés. Find House Chai, the signature Masala Dabba, our best-selling Cookery book and calming incense.
Our shiny new all-day bar-café is a salute to Bombay’s eating and drinking culture, smack-bang in Brighton’s Lanes.
We’ve got round-the-clock deliciousness from morning until late with an all-new menu (alongside some Dum favourites). Pop by for a Bacon Naan Roll first thing,
grab craveable snacks and savouries for lunch, or hang here till late with seriously good cocktails (Feni Martini or Mango Lassi Punch, though? That’s the question). All while stomping your feet to a playlist of punk, hip-hop, disco and soul.
Expect to have a damn good time.
We’re heading into March as we mean to go on: filling our eyes, ears and bellies courtesy of many talented creators in the South Asian community. Whether you’re in the mood for stirring music or a contemplative read, we hope you find something you enjoy.
The month of Ramadan may be a period of fasting but it’s equally synonymous with feasting. Iftar – the evening meal with which Muslims break their fast – is an occasion for eating favourite dishes and indulging in the naughtiness of moreish snacks after a day of abstaining, and these cheese-and-pastry twirls make the perfect snack.
Compassion. Generosity. Discipline. Honesty. Selflessness. Tolerance. These principles lie at the heart of Islam. Our Muslim brothers and sisters are bound to give, share and take care of others.
The holy month of Ramadan is upon us, when Muslims around the world fast daily from dawn till dusk. It is a time of private worship and spiritual discipline, but also of shared joy and abundant feasting. Families and communities come together at suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, and at iftar, the evening meal, to break their fasts with copious, delicious dishes. Join us on 7th April for our own Iftar celebration – for an evening of feasting and live music.

Dum was a game-changer: stylish, affordable and with a defiantly youthful outlook that was more focused on how Londoners wanted to eat in the 21st-century than outdated British attitudes to both Indian cuisine and India itself.
West Minister Council
The staffers are friendly, the prices are low and the food is first-class. I had one of my most enjoyable meals of the year here. Dum well encapsulates the current trend for quality without fuss.
